The title of this post is something that not that long ago, I thought I’d never get to type.
I’m not going to turn this blog into a West Ham blog, because there are so many people who do it so much better than me. Iain Dale’s West Ham till I die is a great example of Hammers blogging, and I couldn’t even compete with that, so I’ll continue rabbiting on about whatever I feel like, in true blog fashion.
Anyway, the Hammers won their 3rd league match in 4 games, something unheard of in recent years.
The thing I’m getting excited about is the amount of goals we’ve been scoring. Since I’ve been a fan, we’ve truly struggled to find a regular goalscorer. Dean Ashton has to be the best “striker” I’ve seen at West Ham since I started watching them play around 1988 when I was 13. The trouble with Ashton was that he was injured so often, and ended retiring early after an injury caused during England duty. I loved Defoe, he could score goals, but he didn’t want to stick around, so I don’t count him as a Hammers hero. Demba Ba had a great scoring record, but he was only at Upton Park for around 4 months before he jumped ship, so the search continued.
Now it seems, there maybe a glimmer of hope in our search for a goalscoring West Ham hero, in the shape of Sam Baldock. Signed from Milton Keynes Dons, many Hammers fans probably said “who?” at the mention of his name and the rumoured £2m transfer fee. He’d already scored 4 times in 4 games for MK Dons this season, before signing for West Ham. He’s now scored 4 in 7 appearances for us, 3 of those appearances came from the bench.
Is it too early to get excited about Baldock ? Yes of course it is. I remember everyone getting excited about Freddy Sears when he scored his debut goal, and it’s fair to say his career hasn’t leapt forward much since that day.
Tomorrow night we play Bristol City at home, and have the chance to make it 3 wins in 3, and I think we’ll achieve it. The only defeat in October was away to Southampton – a fixture that every other team have lost so far this season, so a 0-1 defeat there is no embarrassment at all.
My prediction is a 4-0 win tomorrow night for West Ham, with Baldock scoring a hatrick. Let’s see what comes of it !?!
Come on you Irons !
