This post is an update from my Sony BDP-S185 Blu-ray Player review. For those that read that post, here’s the update of the saga.
It turns out that Hiwayhifi are wrong, the Sony BDP-S185 will not connect to my wireless broadband even after buying the Sony UWABR100 USB Network Adapter Dongle for £49.99 ! Confused ? Well read the first post and you’ll understand my dilemma.
So yesterday the kind people at Currys took back my
new old Blu-Ray player, and I bought the Sony BDP-S380B Blu-ray Player for £20 more, at £119.99. This version DOES connect to my wireless network and does show BBC iPlayer and all the other functions that the BDP-S185 states it does, but via a dongle connection rather then a wire.
Am I happy now ? No, not really. The annoyance is that to connect to their online streaming including Love Film (which we subscribe to) I still needed to purchase and use the Sony UWABR100 USB Network Adapter Dongle – just because Sony won’t allow a normal dongle of any other brand to work with their Blu-ray player.
So, after buying the Blu-ray player, and their dongle, I’ve forked out a total of £169.98 – Amazon sell the Sony PlayStation 3 Slim Console for just £189 – so for a further £19 I could of played ps3 games, had 160gb harddrive, wireless connection and generally been a lot happier with my purchase. So that is my advice, if considering purchasing the Sony BDP-S380B Blu-ray Player and connecting to your wireless network, don’t bother, spend £19 more and get a PS3 – you can thank me later.
